Dodge Viper GTS (Gen II) · 1996–2002

The Gen II GTS is the fixed-roof coupe that joined the Viper line in 1996, built around an 8.0-litre, 450 hp all-aluminium OHV V10 driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual — no turbos, no traction control, ABS only from 2001. Its "double-bubble" roof and launch Viper Blue with twin white stripes make a clean early coupe the shape collectors chase.

Know the real one

8.0L (7,990cc) V10, 450 hp / 490 lb-ft, gated 6-speed manual, RWD. First fixed-roof Viper; the raised 'double-bubble' roof cleared a helmet. GTS launched with more power than the RT/10 roadster and added airbags, A/C and power windows.
First-year 1996 coupes - 1,166 built - all left the factory in GTS Blue with dual white stripes; Viper Red and black came later. That launch livery is the value anchor and the most-copied look, so repainted/restriped cars are common.
VIN tell: Gen II reads 1B3ER, with the 9th-position body digit '9' = GTS coupe (not '5' = RT/10 roadster) and 'E' = 8.0 V10; plant code 'V' = Conner Avenue. Verify the body color against the door-jamb paint code to catch a restripe or repaint.
Top factory tier is the 1998 GT2 Championship Edition: 100 built, Stone White with blue stripes, 460 hp, full aero body kit, Oreca five-point harnesses and a numbered dash plaque - the plaque and harnesses separate a genuine GT2 from a bodykit lookalike.
