Audi R8 (Type 42) · 2008–2015

The Type 42 R8 V10 pairs a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 — sharing its architecture with the Lamborghini Gallardo — with an exposed metal shift gate, one of the last open-gate manuals. Collector demand centers almost entirely on that gated 6-speed: a mid-mounted, 8,000-rpm V10 behind a clutch pedal is a format that effectively ended with this car.

The one to have: 2014–2015 (post-facelift) V10 5.2 FSI coupe with the Lamborghini-sourced open-gate 6-speed manual, quattro, unmodified and low-mileage - the scarcest factory drivetrain of the run (reportedly about 31 V10 gated coupes for US-2015). Ibis White, Daytona Grey or a factory metallic over black, on factory 5-spoke or 10-spoke wheels.

Know the real one

Open-gate 6-speed manual is Lamborghini-sourced with an exposed metal shift gate; it was offered only on the V8 and the standard V10 - never on the R-tronic-only R8 GT, nor on the S-tronic-only V10 Plus and US Competition.
V8 = 4.2 FSI, 414-430 hp; V10 = 5.2 FSI, 518 hp (V10 Plus 542 hp, US-only Competition 570 hp). The V10 arrived for the 2009 model year.
Manual take-rate fell steeply over the run - roughly 20-25% of 2008-09 cars but only about 5% of 2014-15 facelift cars; reportedly around 51 V10 gated coupes were built for US-2014 and 31 for US-2015.
2013 facelift added LED headlights and a reshaped grille and swapped the single-clutch R-tronic for the 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch; R-tronic and S-tronic are paddle automatics, not the gated manual, so verify the clutch pedal and metal gate on any 'manual' claim.
