Renault 5 Turbo 2 · 1983–1986
The Renault 5 Turbo is a homologation special built to contest Group B/Group 4 rallying: an ordinary supermini reworked into a mid-engined, rear-drive, turbocharged monster with cartoonishly flared arches feeding rear-mounted radiators. The Turbo 2 (1983–1986) is the cost-reduced production follow-up to the alloy-bodied Turbo 1 — mechanically the same wild layout, built in larger numbers, and now a firmly established collectible.
The one to have: A genuine mid-engined Turbo 2 (not a converted front-drive R5) with matching numbers, unmodified boost and low mileage, ideally in a period Renault Sport livery or a solid factory colour on the correct Gotti/factory alloys. Original interiors and documented history separate the good cars from the many tired, modified survivors.

Know the real one
Purpose-built to homologate the R5 Turbo for rallying — Group 4 then Group B — which required a production run; the Turbo 2 was Renault's cheaper, higher-volume way to keep the car in showrooms.
Turbo 1 vs Turbo 2 is the key split: the earlier Turbo 1 has aluminium doors/roof/tailgate and a bespoke Bertone interior and commands a premium; the Turbo 2 uses standard R5 steel panels and switchgear to cut cost — mechanically near-identical.
Verify it is a genuine factory mid-engined car, not one of many R5 bodies converted or replicated; check the chassis number, the rear-mid engine bay, the twin rear-mounted radiators and the correct wide-arch bodywork.
Values reward originality: unmodified boost, correct alloys (factory or period Gotti), original flared bodywork free of accident repair, and low warranted mileage. Many survivors were driven hard and tuned — those trade below clean, standard cars.
