The NA1 is the original pop-up-headlight NSX: a transverse, mid-mounted 3.0-litre C30A V6 — Honda's first V6 VTEC engine, and the model that brought VTEC to the US market — wrapped in the world's first mass-produced all-aluminium monocoque, developed with test input from Ayrton Senna. Honda engineered it as a supercar usable every day, and the pre-facelift 5-speed manual revs to an 8,000-rpm redline.
The one to have: A clean, unmodified NSX with an unbranded title and documented history — the analog NA1 (pop-up headlights, 5-speed) for purists, the 2002-on NA2 (3.2, 6-speed) for pace and usability. Never a branded-title or Comptech-blown car.

Know the real one
NA1 (1990-2001) = 3.0L C30A VTEC V6 in the world's first mass-production all-aluminium monocoque; pop-up headlights, 5-speed (a 6-speed and 3.2L arrived with the NA2 in 1997). US cars wear Acura badges, JDM cars wear Honda.
Ayrton Senna testing prototypes at Suzuka pushed Honda to significantly stiffen the chassis before launch — the analog benchmark that reset what a usable everyday supercar could be.
The 2002+ facelift is the visual tell: fixed HID projector headlights replaced the pop-ups, 290 hp. The JDM-only NSX-R (~483 NA1-era, ~140 NA2) is the stripped halo — carbon hood, fixed wing, Recaro carbon-Kevlar seats; 'R-look' replicas are common, so verify chassis/VIN.
Modified (Comptech supercharger) and rebuilt/branded-title cars trade far below clean stock examples despite headline hammer prices — confirm original spec, unbranded title and service history before paying a low-mile premium.
