Ferrari Dino 246 GT · 1969–1974

The Dino 246 GT was the first volume mid-engined car from Maranello, sold under the Dino name in honor of Enzo's late son rather than as a Ferrari, with a transverse 2.4-litre V6 and Pininfarina lines many consider the prettiest Ferrari ever built. Matching-numbers coupes lead the core market, while the 'chairs and flares' cars sit at the very top.

The one to have: A matching-numbers 246 GT coupe, ideally Classiche certified with documented (Massini) history and an honest restoration. The 246 GTS targa and the 'chairs and flares' cars (Daytona seats plus flared arches over Campagnolo wheels) command the biggest premiums.

Know the real one

Sold as a 'Dino', not a Ferrari, and named for Enzo's son Alfredo 'Dino' Ferrari; bodies were designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti.
The 2.4-litre Tipo 245 V6, mounted transversely behind the seats, evolved from the earlier 2.0 206's alloy engine into an iron-block unit; the 246 was the first junior, higher-volume mid-engined Ferrari and set the template for the 308 that followed.
Two body styles: the 246 GT coupe (2,295) and the 246 GTS targa (1,274). The most valuable cars are the 'chairs and flares' examples, combining Daytona-style seats with flared wheel arches over wider Campagnolo wheels.
3,569 were built 1969-1974. Matching-numbers, Classiche-certified and well-documented (Massini) cars lead; GTS targas and chairs-and-flares cars sit clearly above plain coupes.
